THE RICHNESS OF THE SOUSS MASSA TERROIR
Morocco has an exceptional potential in terms of aromatic and medicinal plants, with more than 4500 identified species and subspecies, including 950 endemics. Among them, 400 species are classified as medicinal and/or aromatic plants.
Thanks to favorable climatic conditions, Morocco provides a conducive environment for the development of a rich and diverse flora, positioning it among the main global producers in this field.
However, only 80 species are effectively exploited, including spontaneous plants such as rosemary, white mugwort, thyme, wild chamomile, oregano, bay laurel, carob tree, lavender, myrtle, and cultivated aromatic and medicinal plants like rose (Qalaat Mgouna), henna (Taroudant, Tata), saffron (Taliouine), mint, verbena, sage, jasmine, geranium.
The cultivation of aromatic and medicinal plants extends to various regions of the country, including the Souss Massa region, which is home to the headquarters of all cooperatives affiliated with the GIE Targanine.
Morocco ranks 12th globally as an exporter of Aromatic and Medicinal Products (AMP), mainly to the European Union (EU).
